Sydney May 2015 (3 photos)
Night. A time for gentle folk to rest. But suddenly the quiet of the night sky is broken by intense shards of light. And the people are happy. It can mean only one thing…
VIVID Sydney is back, now in its 7th year. From May 22 until June 8, nightly displays, projections and 3D art sculptures pierce the darkness and illuminate the mind. This year more than 60 displays are being presented. The largest event of its kind, VIVID Sydney continues to attract more visitors each year. An estimated 1.43 million people attended the various events of VIVID in 2014, including 19,500 international visitors on Vivid Sydney travel packages. I wonder how many times they counted me.
For the 4th consecutive year, I’ve ventured into the city and the harbourside to photograph some of the displays. Over the next few posts, I invite you to see VIVID Sydney through my eyes. So sit back, grab a glass of wine, relax and enjoy the show from the safety of your own home. Because it’s a jungle out there…
A wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh
A wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh
In the jungle, the mighty jungle…
…
My friend Paula has a challenge about telling stories through photography this week. I may be able to participate for once.
…
This is part 1 of my 9 part VIVID Sydney 2015 series.
My photography from previous years of VIVID Sydney can be found here.
Thank you my King 🙂 Have a spectacular evening/night!
Thank you, Paula. I got a few more good shots last just – just in time, before the rain came. 🙂

Its already been a year!!! Whoa! Time just flew by. Looking forward to this year’s series and stories 🙂
Time does fly! Thank you very much KG. I’ll have a few more photos for you later. 🙂
Amazing captures, Dragon. VIVID is certainly a one of a kind light show, much more than Melbourne’s White Night which is only on one night of the year. Ah, the Jungle Song. I love it. Thank you for that 🙂
Thanks. Fortunately, 18 nights is plenty of time to get around and see most of the stuff, at least if you’re a resident here. 🙂
Wow! Beautiful shots!
Thank you very much. 🙂
When is a certain dragon going to appear on the opera house? Yay for my favorite series!
You know me too well. Last night. 🙂
Fantastic!!! Thanks for the dates. I’ll have to plan it for next year 🙂
It’s always scheduled to end on the Queen’s Birthday holiday. Hope you get to see it. 🙂
Oh great thanks Lignum. I’ll will try to plan it for next year. I’ve always admired your photos of it 🙂
Thanks, Norma.
Yes! Vivid it is. Amazingly so!
It’s sensory overload time for a B&W street photographer. 🙂
Oh yeah…I get it 😉
🙂
“Fantastic”….
….that’s the word for these fantasmagorical views!
Thank you very much. The festival has really grown in the last couple of years.
I’m laid up at home with a broken foot and have spent a good part of my morning being thoroughly captivated by your images. May just have to add a trip to Sydney on my bucket list…you’ve unearthed a desire in me to see this in person!
Thank you very much. I really look forward to this time of the year. I’ve no idea how they come up with some of these displays.
Wow, it’s that time of year again! I can definitely see a jungle theme in these. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
A couple of the smaller displays have reappeared this year, but I couldn’t find any wabbits. Still, there’s enough to keep one interested. 🙂
I haven’t seen any of post that doesn’t tell wonderful stories. Looking forward to seeing your 2015 vivid Sydney series, Dragon. 🙂
Thank you, Amy, you’re too kind. I’ve already got quite a few photos to sort through, and there’s still another 11 nights to go. 🙂
11 nights to go… Are you now working for NG? 🙂
No. 🙂 But I hope to go on a couple of more nights.
Already a year from the last one, waouh the time past so fast ….
Always great pictures for an exhibition so beautiful.
Hurry to see the next ones.
Many hugs
Thank you, Sophie. The colours are very bold this year. There’s a lot to see, but so little time. I didn’t get home until after midnight last night with all the photography I wanted to do. 🙂
I can’t believe the year has gone so fast! I shall look forward to the journey with you again – my armchair is at the ready… 🙂
The event gets bigger each year. I think I need to hire an associate to help me with all the photography I want to get done. 🙂 But it’s fun.
And the light shows are different each year?
All new each year. The Opera House display is by an English company this year.
I should think you could! (participate 🙂 ) You’ll be entertaining us for a night or two if these are anything to go by.
Thank you. 🙂 My SD card is in meltdown. There’s a lot to see.
I’ll bet Jude wishes she were here right now to get some shots along the lines of yours, LD … which are, of course, terrific !
No doubt. Will try to go to The Star next week. Thank you very much, MR.
Ah Vivid images … always a crowd pleaser ! Looking forward to more.
Thank you. I’ve got a few late nights coming up because of this event. 🙂
I particularly love that last photo! I’m heading to Vivid tonight, so hopefully I can get some good shots too 🙂
Thanks. I hope you have a good time. Try to go midweek as well, if you can. The crowds will be a bit thinner. 🙂
Time sure does fly but hooray for more Vivid photos! I’ve enjoyed each series and can see this one is going to be a winner.
There was a downpour the first night, but thankfully it’s been clear skies so far since. I look forward to this each year.
Those ‘trees’ are really cool.
Very. 🙂

it’s not wine, it’s a chino right this very moment… I’m relaxed and enjoying your post, a dragon in the jungle makes for amazing photographs 🙂
enjoy a wonderful weekend, Lignum!
Thank you, Alex. Wood dragons are at home in the jungle. 🙂
Have a great weekend too.
Yay!!! It’s time again!!! 😀 I’m super excited to see what you will capture this year!!! Bring on the eye candy!!! 😉
It’s a fun time here for photographers. You can tell the serious ones – we have tripods. It’s amazing how many people with dslrs don’t have tripods, and wonder why their photos are blurred. 🙂 More later.
Hahahaha! 😀 True words!!! I have 2 tripods! 😀 I’m glad i fit in the serious category!
You’re definitely serious. 🙂
Awesome images The final one is surreal!
Thanks. As you approach the Opera House, the first glimpse you catch of the show is always a good feeling.
I wonder if the Architect of this landmark building ever realized how it would play the perfect backdrop to displays like this
I doubt anyone recognised the full impact and utility of this design when it was first suggested.
Vivid seems to be coming around ever more quickly with each year! Wonderful shots as ever Lignum with a great pulsing beat to them.
Thank you, Patti. Each year comes with higher expectations. The late nights are catching up with me though. 🙂
Love all series! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you very much. All this colour is burning my eyes, at times. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Have a great weekend too.
It looks so cool! Looking forward to seeing more photos!
Thank you. I’m always keen to see what they come up with each year.
Fantastic images, Lignum!
Thank you, Lisa.
What striking images, vivid and vibrant!
Thanks, it’s that kind of an event. 🙂
wow!!
🙂
VIVID is back!
I’ve loved your previous years posts, and look forward to this years.
That second image: I loved to walk through that installation; it’d be like walking through a magical forest of light.
Thanks, a bit of colourful fun for cold autumn/winter nights. My most recent post reveals the details and artist’s intent about the second photo installation, a “mangrove forest”.
This looks like a funtastic festival! Although now I can’t get that song out of my head! LOL!
More jungle creatures to come. 🙂
Beautiful photo essay.
Thank you very much.

I can’t believe a year has passed since the previous Vivid Sydney. And it’s the darkest time of year on your side of the globe now. Wonderful photos Draco, beautiful vibrant colors. A fun festival to break the darkness!
Yes, it’s winter now. The lights definitely bring a smile to people’s faces. 🙂
