“The genius thing…”
Melbourne September 2016 – Sydney August 2014 (4 photos)
Wandering around Melbourne recently, I was walking up this street when I happened to look back and see the quote painted on the wall. I instantly knew I had to stop and wait for a couple to come walking up the street. Ten minutes later I got this shot. I would have preferred an elderly couple to come walking by instead, but no luck. I gave up and walked away. Such is life.
Over at the Weekly Photo Challenge, this week’s theme is Nostalgia.
So for my post-break post, how about a nostalgic look back at a few previous photos that individually suit this theme?
“I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.”
Nostalgia for some. A nightmare for others.
“This is my home.”
The urban developers have been busy since I took this photo. If there were a sign today, it would say “this used to be my home”.
“Memories, of the way we were.”
The work represents the artist Kathleen Berney, a child of refugee boat people, on a slippery dip in this exact location in 1953. Childhood memories slide in and out of consciousness.
Wonderful shots. I feel the nostalgia.
Thank you. Photography is all about memories.
Good to see you back LD π
Thank you very much, Jude.
Nostalgic memories all round, Dragon. Love how there is a bit of distance between the couple in the first shot. Goes along with the sentiments of Jay-Z the quote very nicely.
My parents bought me Barbie dolls as a kid. They made me dizzy, and I never really liked them at all. But that song by Aqua, oh yes, I did like that song a lot π
Thank you. Yes, the slight distance adds a bit in the context of the quote.
Personally, I found those Barbies to be a bit creepy. π
Yay! The Dragon has returned! From a long holiday perhaps! Welcome back, and thanks for the nostalgia!
I never know if I’m coming or going. Dragon time rarely equates to human time. π π π
Thank you.
Back with some nostalgic feelings… very appropriate π and awesome photographs LD.
Oh! Barbie! (and no, I am not a fan)
Thank you very much. All those barbies together were a bit creepy like that. π
Memories…. Now I need to find a slide that would take an adult π
LOL. As long as you’re young at heart, that’s what matters. π
Welcome back, Dragon! Stories in each photo…
Thank you very much, Amy. π
The last one did it for me. Commentaries add so much depth (angle or level?) to the already expressive photos!
I agree. Without the background, the last one is hard to understand. With it, it becomes so much better.
Thank you, the first text made my day!
Thanks. It’s a good philosophy for life.
Lignum, this is brilliant ~ what photography is all about. Finding things around you that resonate and then capturing the mood perfectly in a photo. Great series of shots, and it is the first one that I find a perfect look of reality. Cheers to a great weekend ahead.
Thank you very much. There’s plenty to observe if we take the time to notice it. Have a great weekend ahead, too.
So true ~ it always amazes to what we sometimes miss when we get caught up in a habit of just going from here to there…
I know. Life is full of such moments.
Great shots Mr Dragon! π
Thank you very much.
Wonderful images, Lignum, and it’s so nice to see you back here!!!
Thank you very much, Lisa. Have a wonderful weekend ahead.
grazie mille
La vita Γ¨ come spesso. Dobbiamo lottare per trovare il significato e la bellezza a volte.
Each photo is a story on its own. The black and white enhances the special atmosphere and details. I’m in awe, talented Wood Dragon!
Thank you. I like to think street photography is about being observant. There are so many stories out there.
Great catch on the Jay Z quote. I like the urban nature of the picture with the bins and all. Black & white captures the grunge well.
Thanks. I think the photo of the house has a bit more emotion in b/w than in colour.
That’s a great quote, and I admire your decision to wait until you had passers by to add to it. The artwork at the end is nice, too.
Thank you. Not giving up is a good philosophy when it comes to what truly matters in life.
Wonderful Mr Draco .. what about the slides? The only thing missing is the jungle Jim.. great post
Thanks, Julie. I still like to slide and swing on those things when I have the excuse of babysitting. π
Well done on not giving up. Great memories!
Thanks, Patti. Sometimes you have to make the shot happen, as you know. π
Wow, so much feeling in every photo. Catching up on blogs and this is the first post I come across. Makes me even more happy to be back. π
Thank you.Though where you spent your most recent trip is quite magical.
Oh yes, what a picture that quote would have been with an elderly couple walking by – awesome! That would go down very well on Tumblr or Reddit. Not that you necessarily want your photography spread about there, but… you know what I mean… keen eyes love a new picture quote! But still… it’s a great picture anyway. Well spotted! π
Thanks. I’m happy with the shot I got but I desperately would have loved an elderly couple walk towards me. Such are the fortunes of the street photographer. π
